What is the Mong Page?

First made available on the Internet on March, 2004, the Mong Page is a collection of web-based resources related to Mong language, history, and culture.

Who are the Mong?

Mong Leng or Mong, in short, is an ancient people whose ancestry can be traced back about 5000 years to China. It is one of the two main ethnic groups: Mong Leng and Hmong Der. The term "Mong" derives from the word Moob, our official name and language. In the west, Mong is often referred to as Blue Hmong, Green Hmong, or Hmong Njua, all which are neither correct nor appropriate.

There are still other designated names such as striped, black, red, and/or flowery Mong; however, these groups either fall under the Mong Leng or Hmong Der umbrella. The consensus, nevertheless, is that long ago, we were all Mong Leng. This may explain why most of the Mong inhabitants in the world today are Mong Leng.

How's this page came about?

This web page came as a way to educate, promote, and preserve our language, history, and culture. It was also created to debunk some of the charges and criticisms others made against the name Mong.

For the record, Mong is our name and it is written exactly as spoken in Mong Leng. It has nothing to do with the charge that it was created to divide our people. Mong is who we are, and we use it to identify ourselves only, nothing more or less.
