What
is the Mong Page?
First made available
on the Internet in March, 2004, the Mong Page is a collection of
Internet-based resources related specifically to the Mong language,
history, culture, news, current events, issues and publications.
Who
are the Mong?
Mong is an
ancient
people whose ancestry can be traced back to at least 4000 years in China. The term "Mong" derives from
the word Moob, the official name we called ourselves.
There are two groups: Mong Leng and Hmong Der.
In the west, Mong Leng is also known as Mong. Nevertheless,
Green Mong is a name with negative connotation so it should not be
used.
There are
still other groups such as striped, black, red, and/or flowery;
however, they all fall under the Mong Leng or
Hmong Der group. Originally, however, the entire ethnicity was
said to be Mong Leng only. This could explain
why the majority of the groups' inhabitants in the world today,
especially in China, Vietnam, and Thailand, are mostly Mong
Leng.
How's
this page came about?
This web page came as a way to educate,
promote and preserve our language, history, and culture for this and
future generations. It
was also created to debunk some of the charges and criticisms others
may have
about the use of our true name Mong (Moob).
For the record, we did
not use Mong as a wedge to divide Mong Leng and Hmong Der as
some may have claimed. Rather, Mong is our name, and we use
it to identify who we are including our language, history, and
culture. In addition, we
believe diversity is a strength, not a
weakness as others may perceive or want people to believe in. If you are Mong,
it is your responsibility to maintain your heritage as well.
If you don't, who will?
Who's
our audience?
Anyone who's
interested in learning and preserving our language, history, and culture.
How
can you help?
Anyone
wishing to contribute articles or ideas to make this site better is always welcome.
